About Me

My image

My name is Dusko Jordanovski. I was born on August 20 1984 in Skopje, Macedonia and I still live there working as a software developer, mostly in the browser or somewhere around it.

What I do

I am a Python developer currently employed by Quipu GmbH. I work on a web interface to the banking software for ProCredit Bank. In my spare time I like goofing around all that is new in the Open Source world, and I'm especially fond of Python and Javascript. I can't seem to choose one thing and stick to it; I've been trying around many languages including C, LISP, Ruby and Objective-C. I once gave a shot to C# and, but I just didn't find the community very interesting, and besides .. who needs another Java anyway? I have a ton of half-finished projects, and I hope that some time soon I'll get the perseverance to finish one of them and contribute to the open source scene.

When I'm not programming I hang out with my friends and girlfriend or I play games .

I have a degree in economics, but I am planing to take on graduate studies in computer science. The realization that I wanted to be a software developer came a bit late in my life, so I didn't want to abandon my hard work. Nevertheless, economics is a really interesting field and it taught me a lot of precious stuff about life.

What I use

tools-strip

The icons are pretty much saying it all. Or maybe if you don't recognize them - it's textmate for coding, sequel pro for databases, the Mac OS X terminal for everything, Cornerstone for SVN, Firebug and jQuery for Javascript. I use a lot more other tools, but these are the most notable.

Favourites

Joel Spolsky, Paul Graham, Jeff Attwood, Steve Yegge, John Gruber... and many more.

Present Job

October, 2009

I'm currently in Frankfurt, Germany on a training/evaluation course in Quipu GmbH.

August, 2009 - October, 2009

Finishing up my university degree. This was a nice period in between jobs that gave me the time needed to prepare my graduation thesis and finish the last 2 exams. It was a success.

Past Jobs

October, 2008 - July, 2009
PHP Developer at Cutting Edge Intelligence. As the only PHP developer (the others work with .NET), I had the joy ( and the pain :) to sometimes work with my own framework, but I mostly deciphered other people's mess or hacked the old Wordpress/OSCommerce. I was responsible for a medium-sized project that had a horrible management with requirements changing every week and I believe was doing a half-assed job, even though the client seemed happy. I was also the javascript go-to guy and the apple and open-source evangelist. I left the company mostly because I got tired of PHP and was hoping to find a job that will require me to learn something new.

August, 2008 - October, 2008 - PHP Developer at Radix Technologies
I was working with the Symfony PHP framework on a very large CRM called ViaRelo (for cargo/moving/relocation business). Although the guys there were awesome, the fact that it was not primarily a software company, and the lack of experienced programmers in my team were the reasons I quit. Also, I didn't really want to write in-house software for cargo businesses, it seemed very bureaucratic. Anyway It was a great experience, and I started using Linux there.

May, 2007 - July, 2008 - Web Developer at Arthaus
This was my first job. I came in with almost no previous programming experience. I was mostly working on the maintenance of a large website for an American client (Etrafficers) which was built in PHP 4. I earned a lot of experience, but after a year I felt that the company's methods and technologies were stale and not getting upgraded so I left.

October, 2005 - April 2006 - Junior Economics analyst at EPRI Macedonia
This was a part-time job that I took while I was still thinking that economics is my profession. I did some analysis on the Macedonian legislative and economic policy and edited the monthly newsletter and wrote reports and commentaries on the political events concerning the economy in Macedonia. No programming involved, but i thought it might be worth a mention.

Volunteer work

April 2009 - present - Working on some modules for time.mk - specifically the weather and TV programme. The work involves parsing html pages and extracting data. I am doing this with Python and it's fabulous regular expression support and threading module.

Freelancing

November, 2008 - Joomla hacking for 365.com.mk
I did some changes in the code for the website owners. I also made a component for Joomla 1.5 but unfortunately that project didn't take off.

March, 2004 - March 2005 - DTP designer at Magor
I worked with Adobe Pagemaker and Quark Xpress in the creation of 2 printed books. I also made the company website as one of my first web programming projects - it was in vanilla ASP.

Projects I have worked on

http://etrafficers.com - Maintenance and feature development in PHP4.

http://robertplant.com - Wordpress customization and coding of plugins.

http://celesq.com - This website is actually built with the PHP framework I made.

http://365.com.mk - Joomla modification and coding plugins.

http://time.mk - Screen scraping of data done with python.

Bonus stuff

I speak French.
